Identify

Renovation with new wood involving reshaping or replacing existing wooden components can be a great way to add character and functionality to a space. 

Treat

To prevent dry rot, the surface is can be treated with a fungicidal coating such as a wood preservative or a paint that contains a fungicide. It's also important to keep the wood dry and well-ventilated to prevent moisture from accumulating. 

Water-Resistant Barrier

Building paper is a heavy-duty, water-resistant paper used as a moisture barrier to protect the building from water infiltration. It can be made from materials like asphalt-saturated felt, kraft paper, or synthetic materials like polyethylene or polypropylene. It is applied to the exterior of the building before the stucco to prevent moisture from seeping into the walls and causing damage, mold, or other issues.

Lath

Next step we install a wire lath, which is a combination of a two- layer asphalt -saturated building paper, it’s a durable water resistant membrane surface.   The coated galvanized wire is attached with staples, nails, or wafer head lath screws. Enabling plaster to key around the metal is to assure a secure bond and a flat, smooth surface plane, for the application of the next 3 layers stucco. 

Stucco 1st Scratch Coat- Applied

The first coat of stucco is a rough coat called ‘scratch coat’. It’s  rough application has deep lines scratched on the surface to improve the bond with the next coats.

Stucco 2nd Coat 'Brown Coat'

The next is called the ‘brown coat’ that helps level the surface. A smoother coat of plaster is applied over the scratch coat.

Stucco 3rd Coat 'Finish Coat'

The final coat is the desired finish coat which can be a smooth finish, or a variety of stylized textures and colors.

  • Color can be added into the stucco to save money not having to paint it
  • Smooth finish: A clean, sleek appearance 
  • Sand float finish: A light sand textured look 
  • A rough, organic look 
  • Lace finish: A delicate, intricate texture
  • Spanish/Mediterranean finish: A textured, aged look 
  • Tuscan/Old World finish: A textured, rustic look achieved by applying multiple layers and using tools to create a distressed appearance
